It is the only way young farmers will want to stay in the sector and develop it as a sustainable business model, says US Secretary of Agriculture Sony Perdue.

"This is the only way young farmers will want to stay in the sector and develop it as a sustainable business model," Perdue said.

The issue of young people was also raised by MEP Asim Ademov. He noted the role of family farms and attracting even more young farmers.

"I believe that it is the family model of agriculture, based on the smooth transition between generations and the wider entry of young people into the sector, that will help us to overcome the challenges we face. Unfortunately, the EU is seeing an outflow of interest from this noble profession and rural areas are rapidly declining. Young people prefer to live in a city where the standard of living is higher and they get higher wages. "

Perdue offered his recipe for sustainable development based on three pillars: environmental, social and economic sustainability.

"Only in this way can we guarantee the labor of our farmers and overcome the populist threats and consumer fears about food quality," Perdue said.

As a result of the discussion, participants in the meeting agreed on the view that Europe and the US share many common causes, regarding the future of agriculture and consumer expectations.

They encouraged more active cooperation to realize the ambitious Green Deal and the farm-to-table strategy. The members of the forum and their US counterparts agreed that cooperation should continue towards joint action to ensure food security and to reduce food waste globally.
