Fans of exotic foods will be able to enjoy super sweet black pomegranates. The R36 variety, which bears the trade name Black Candy, will be registered as a product with a protected geographical indication in Spain. In the near future it will appear in stores and markets outside, reports FreshPlaza. The fruits of this variety of pomegranate have a medium size and black skin throughout the period of development.
New trends in fruit consumption show that medium sizes are the most preferred. This also applies to sweets, explains a representative of the company that created the variety. Since 2005, the company has been experimenting with the discovery of new varieties of pomegranate, using the method of crossbreeding and hybridization. The first black pomegranate was obtained 5 years ago, and now the first harvest of it is to be sold on the market.
The fruit has already been tested by scientists who have confirmed that black pomegranate contains a unique combination of nutrients that distinguish it from its red counterparts. Black pomegranate is positioned as a premium product and will provoke interest among consumers, its creators are sure. We have yet to find out if their hopes will come true.
