The Dutch company Certhon recently completed the construction of a 1.8-hectare tomato greenhouse in the port city of Ofunato in northern Honshu, Japan. Not far from Ofunato there is an underwater volcano that causes regular earthquakes. That is why the new greenhouse had to follow strict anti-seismic rules that are in force in Japan.

When creating a greenhouse in a seismically dangerous area, where a strong wind regularly blows, the high mechanical load had to be taken into account. The high-tech multi-storey greenhouse with a roof, as in Venlo-type greenhouses, is covered with F-Clean film (ETFE). The combination of foil and narrow aluminum profiles, located at a great distance from each other, have provided high light transmission - up to 94%. The high-quality aluminum roof structures and the heavy steel structures of the entire greenhouse in combination with F-Clean film have made the greenhouse resistant to strong earthquakes.
