Six years ago, the Chinese company Baofeng Group began managing 107 square kilometers of deserted land. They initially planted alfalfa to improve the soil. The company then began growing goji berry in the same location, a traditional crop in the Ningxia region with a 1,000-year history. To make full use of the potential of the earth's resources, Huawei Smart PV built a solar power plant above the plantations, informs elektrovesti.net.

According to the plan, the power plant will cover an area of 20 square kilometers and its capacity will reach 1 gigawatt. To this end, Huawei will use horizontal uniaxial automatic tracking, allowing solar panels to track the movement of the sun like a sunflower. This will significantly increase the efficiency of electricity generation compared to traditional photovoltaic power plants.

The panels are located at a height of 2.9 meters, which not only provides enough space for growing goji berries, but also allows optimal operation and maintenance. Baofeng added that they use Huawei's drones and smart control system to monitor the station.

The ecosystem in this region has improved. The number of small wild animals and birds has significantly increased, the Chinese company notes. It is believed that the solar power plant will effectively reduce moisture evaporation - by 30-40%.

All plantations are with drip irrigation, as very little rainfall falls annually, added a representative of Huawei. According to the company, after the completion of the project it will save 557.6 thousand tons of coal per year.
