Circular economics experts advise that we not only have to develop alternative plastic appliances, but also to ensure they really do the job they were made for.
Ice cream scoops, which are 100 percent biodegradable, have been created by a startup company in Stuttgart. This way, the company is fighting against the disposal of 360 million plastic spoons that go to garbage every year in Germany.
The project started in 2018 as a university development. The spoon consists of fiber made from the shell of the cocoa beans mixed with flour. It lasts about an hour without melting into the user's hands, then they can be eaten. It has been on the market since April last year and has been sold more than 1 million times.
Circular economics experts advise not only to develop alternative plastic appliances, but also to see if they really work. In the case of the chocolate spoons, it is important that they really be eaten, not thrown into the waste bin, as this will accumulate food waste instead of plastic. Another problem with such products is their composition. If their production requires new plants that displace other crops and require a large area and a lot of water, then the environmental impact is more negative, experts warn.
